PV Evaluation Systems

 

Solar cells and modules usually show a gradual performance decline when deployed outdoors and exposed to environmental conditions. EKO evaluation systems are designed to measure the performance characteristics and maximum output power of solar cells and modules. Those are measurement quantities that physically correlate to the incident irradiance and electric load, the spectral efficiency which is strongly depending on the solar spectrum and other electrical properties e.g. the diode characteristics and internal resistance affecting the cell efficiency. To get a proper understanding of the individual performance parameters or characteristics relative to the influencing measurement conditions, special measurement equipment is required. For this purpose EKO offers an adequate measurement solution for most relevant quantities.

To test the long term stability of PV modules, most obvious with EKO's MP-160 based outdoors test system the I-V characteristics of PV cells and modules can be measured simultaneously with various meteorological components like irradiance, wind, humidity and pressure. The PV measurement system is based on a single or multi channel I-V curve tracer with module switching units and data logger.

With EKO's indoor test system cell can be tested in a controlled environment according to the several test standard defined to measure module performance and stability.

Outdoors PV module evaluation system

The EKO Photovoltaic (PV) module(s) evaluation system is designed to measure I-V curve characteristics, module back-side temperature and solar total irradiance to evaluate the power variance and STC performance of single modules under the natural sun light and environmental conditions.

The main instrument is the I-V curve tracer MP-160, but combined with a MI-520 module selector and MI-540 thermocouple selector it can measure 12 modules in a sequence. The complete system can be expanded up to 48 module and Temperature channels.

The system works autonomously so that data can be automatically retrieved by setting the daily start time, measurement interval and finish time. The system will continuously run upon the operators stop command. All measured data can be converted towards STC conditions calculated on the module parameters (Alpha, Beta, Kappa and Rs) typical for each module.

For more extensive performance analysis of the module performance subject to varying solar and environmental operating conditions (e.g. Direct Radiation, Diffuse, Spectral changes, Windspeed, Wind direction, Ambient temperature, Relative humidity) EKO offers a complete Solar monitoring system configured with specific solar and meteorological sensors.

 

Indoors PV module evaluation system

The indoor automatic PV cell evaluation system is based on a solar simulator and I-V curve tracer either MP-160 or MP-180 depending on the cell characteristics. In combination with the optional thermal cooling plate for optimal cell temperature control and automatic transfer system, continuous measurements can be made.

By using the 4-terminal test jig, with vacuum mount for optimal contact and temperature control fully optimizes the I-V measurement. With this plate the contact resistance and lead wire resistance is minimized, to make an accurate evaluation of cells possible. All Jigs for Si crystalline cells, Si thin film cells, pack contact cells, DSC, and organic semiconductor cells are adapted by EKO to be able to work under optimal conditions.

When testing cells using a large solar simulator will make it difficult to maintain a constant cell temperature and requires a special temperature control set up. EKO's small Climate Chamber and Cool Air Generator is capable to control the temperature from the back side but also cools the cell from the top by ventilating cool air to maintain a constant temperature. The temperature control unit can simulate different temperature conditions, such as I-V measurements in below-zero temperature and temperature above the standard test conditions and has a temperature cycle function.

The indoor PV cell evaluation system is widely used in research applications and inspection of cells during the manufacturing process.
